The
Jamaica Columns, a modern day Jamaican Great House, is an ideal
choice for a vacation villa rental in the Montego Bay area.
Set on
5 acres and elevated 150' above the Caribbean Sea, the Jamaica
Columns offers beautiful views of the sea to the north and the
mountainous interior to the south. Located in Rose Hall, 8km
east of Montego Bay's international airport (MBJ), the Jamaica
Columns is ideally situated to take advantage of the numerous
golf courses, beaches, hill walks and attractions of Montego
Bay and Jamaica's North Coast.
The Grounds
The Jamaica
Columns consists of 5 acres of land on which is set the Great
House, the Guest House, the Staff Quarters, the Pool and Pool
House.
The Great
House is situated to offer the most spectacular views of the
sea, and also to enjoy the cool breezes that descend from the
mountains in the evening. The 5 acres surrounding the house
include the orchards with a collection of citrus and other Jamaican
fruits - depending on the season, from our gardens you can pick
fresh oranges, grapefruits, limes, ackee, breadfruit, avocados,
mangos, custard apples and noni. Not to be outdone by the fruit,
there is a plethora of flowering plants to enjoy outdoors as
well as to cut and bring indoors.
The Great
House
The Great
House is two stories tall. The main floor consists of the entrance
foyer with a soaring 30' ceiling and sweeping staircase leading
up to the second floor. To the east is the Living Room, 24'
by 40', where you'll find seating for 12 and a card table for
4. The television with cable is located in this space. The 14'
ceilings float above, and with windows to the south, facing
the mountains, and the north, facing the seas, the views and
breeze are sublime. Through the foyer is the formal Dining Room
with seating for 12 at 2 tables. There are 5 double French doors
which open onto the porches towards the sea to allow the breeze
through. To the west is the less formal Outdoor Dining Room,
the location where most guests chose to eat their meals. This
informal space allows you to look out to sea and enjoy the colors
of the Caribbean, or, at night, the passing lights of cruise
ships. To the east of the formal Dining Room and north of the
Living Room, you will find the Sitting Porch, 16 by 40, where
again the family and most guests will spend their social time.
With seating for 9, this is an area in which to relax, read
a book, gaze out to sea and have evening cocktails. The Kitchen
is found beyond the dining rooms, and the Staff Quarters are
located beyond the western side of the house.
Up the
stairway, you will find 2 bedrooms and the sun porch. Each bedroom
in the Great House occupies approximately 24' by 40' and each
has attached bathrooms. The East Bedroom consists of one king
size bed (a beautiful antique Jamaican bed that sits a little
high - there is a step stool to help step up to the bed), one
double bed, a sitting area (consisting of one couch and two
armchairs) along with dressers and desk. There is over 20' of
closet space, a double vanity along with tub and toilet. The
West Bedroom holds 2 double beds, several armchairs and about
15' of closet. The bathroom has a large walk-in shower in place
of a tub. Both bedrooms offer views south to Flower Hill and
north over the Caribbean Sea. The bedrooms are air conditioned,
each bedroom with its own controls, but the nightly prevailing
breezes blow through the rooms and keep the bedrooms comfortably
cool for sleeping. In the morning you will likely awake to the
sounds of green parrots and doves.
Step through
the French doors at the top of the stairs and you will find
yourself on the sun porch which runs the length of the house,
about 16' by 80', and affords a terrific view of the sea. Beautiful
in the early morning or late in the day, it is an ideal spot
to stretch, meditate and quietly enjoy the view and surroundings.
The Guest
House
The guest
house sits to the east of the great house and is accessed through
the Living Room via a breezeway.
There are
2 bedrooms in the Guest House. The North Bedroom is furnished
with a king size bed, which is hard to leave in the morning
as there is a large bay window offering views of the Caribbean
while lying in bed. Also, there are double French doors leading
out toward the Pool House. The South Bedroom contains 2 double
beds and also has French doors leading to the Pool House. There
is one bathroom in the guest wing for the guests of both the
North and South Bedrooms.
Pool and
Pool House
The oval-shaped
pool is approximately 20' by 40' and, due to the slope in the
yard, elevated at one end - offering exposure to wonderful breezes
and views down over the Half Moon Golf Course. The Pool House
sits to the south of the pool and is a shaded area that is an
ideal location for lunch or afternoon snacks.
The Staff
The staff
consists of a cook, the housekeeper and two grounds persons.
Work with the cook to coordinate meals and any special dietary
needs or concerns. The staff can accompany you on shopping trips
to the nearby stores and markets. The housekeeper will take
care of the cleaning of the living space and will also take
care of any laundry needs you may have.
